Job hunting after graduation: tips and tricks for a successful start

Your degree is almost in hand – and with it, an exciting journey into the world of work begins. Job hunting after graduation can feel overwhelming at first, with so many new possibilities and decisions to navigate. To help you get off to a strong start, here are five key tips and tricks that will make your job search a lot easier.

  1. Network, network, network: One of the most important things you can do after graduating is build your professional network. Connect with former classmates, professors, and alumni in your field. Use platforms like LinkedIn to make contacts and stay informed about potential career opportunities. You can also attend career fairs, networking events, and GoVersity events. Networking gives you access to insider information and lets you hear about job openings that aren't publicly advertised.

  2. Optimise your CV: Your CV is your calling card for potential employers. It needs to be clear, well-structured, and to the point. Tailor it to each job you apply for and highlight only the relevant skills and experience. Make sure it's error-free and includes your contact details. Lead with your experience. A strong CV can make all the difference and set you apart from other applicants.

  3. Prepare for interviews: A job interview can be nerve-wracking, but solid preparation gives you confidence. Research the company, show genuine interest in its culture and mission. Prepare answers to commonly asked questions and practise presenting your experience and skills. It also helps to identify your strengths beforehand – you can do this, for example, with the Strengths Scan. And don't forget to ask your own questions about the company and the role. It shows engagement and motivation.

  4. Internships and working student roles: If you have the opportunity to do internships or working student positions in your desired field during your studies, take it. Internships give you valuable insights into the working world and let you build practical experience. Employers value applicants with relevant experience, and internships can help you deepen your expertise and expand your network.

  5. Use your university's resources: Many universities offer career advisory services for students and graduates. Make use of these resources to get support with your job search. Career advisors often have access to job listings specifically aimed at graduates and students.

Job hunting after graduation can feel daunting at first – but with the right approach, a positive mindset, and a bit of patience, you can significantly improve your chances of a successful start in your career.
