Do you work in the social sector and want to further your education by studying?
Or have you always been interested in the social sector, but don’t know exactly what it is and would like to know more about career prospects? Then you will find relevant information for you in the following article!
What is “social work”?
Someone who works in the field of “social work” supports people in everyday life and helps with various problems and crises.
Why should you study “social work” at all?
There are many reasons why you should study social work. These include:
- Personal satisfaction: “Social work” is a professional field that offers the opportunity to help other people and improve their lives. Many people who work in social work report a high level of personal satisfaction from their job.
- Diverse career opportunities: The “Social Work” degree program prepares students for a wide range of career opportunities in various fields, e.g. in child and youth welfare, disability care or geriatric care. This means that graduates of the “Social Work” degree program have many career prospects.
- Good job prospects: Graduates of “social work” are in high demand in many areas and job prospects are therefore generally very good. an According to the Federal Employment Agency, the number of people in employment with an academic degree in social work has increased significantly since 2011 (see Federal Employment Agency, 2022). This means that “social work” has gained massively in importance in Germany.
- Opportunity for further training: The “Social Work” degree course offers the opportunity to further your education in various areas within social work and thus specialize in certain career fields.
- Opportunity for self-realization: By studying “Social Work”, you can develop personally and professionally and get involved in social issues.
- Social task: Social workers help to improve the living conditions of people who find themselves in difficult life situations. For example, they support children and young people who are affected by violence or people who are in a personal crisis. Through their work, they make an important contribution to a fairer society.
Professions after graduating in social work:
The “Social Work” degree program offers a wide range of career opportunities for graduates. Social workers are active in various fields and can work in many different institutions and organizations.
- One of the most important areas of employment for graduates is child and youth welfare. This includes work in kindergartens, youth centers, schools and homes, for example. Social workers in child and youth welfare are responsible for looking after, advising and supporting children and young people and their families. They work, for example, to help with school problems or crises in the family.
- Another important area of application is helping the disabled. This includes, for example, working in assisted living homes, day care centers or in outpatient care for people with physical, mental or psychological impairments. Social workers in disability services support and care for these people and their families. They help, for example, with their integration into everyday life, with arranging leisure activities or helping with problems in education.
- Elderly care is also a possible field of activity for graduates of the “Social Work” degree program. This includes, for example, work in retirement homes, day care or outpatient care for the elderly. Social workers in geriatric care advise and support older people and their families. They help, for example, in dealing with conflicts, promoting understanding and planning and organizing activities and events for older people.
Studying “Social Work” is therefore a worthwhile investment in your own future. It not only offers a broad field of activity and the opportunity to take on an important social task, but also promotes personal development.
